Bulb Growers Tip:

Spring bulbs can be lifted, divided and replanted 'in the green'. This means that after (or even during) flowering in the Springtime the clump of bulbs can be lifted leaves and all. Using a garden fork or similar prise the clump apart, then replant in drifts or scattered patches. Look for the soil mark on the stems and leaves in order to get the depth correct - this is also usually the point where the stems and leaves change from white to green. Most bulbs will benefit from some grit being lightly dug into the bottom of the planting hole prior to planting - this is particularly the case on heavy or clay soils. Never cut off the green leaves of bulbs, the plants need these leaves to build up their bulbs for next year's flowering. Bulbs growing in lawns should be left unmown until the leaves start to die down naturally. Nor should you tie the leaves into knots as this will again impair the following year's flowering. A general fertilizer can be scattered around the bases of the the bulb-clumps to further build up the bulbs for the following year. Untidy-looking leaves of bulbs can be hidden by planting the bulbs amongst taller subjects.
