Any Do-It-Yourselfer knows that eventually, you need a place to work in peace and store your tools. It can be a great way to accomplish more in a short amount of time and get rid of the mess around the home. Most likely, you will need a workbench in your chosen area and you will definitely need to keep it organized. Workbenches can be built from scratch, purchased in prefabricated kits or purchased as already complete and ready to use. The problem is that these previously assembled models can be very expensive, so many choose to build their own version. Workbenches are perfect for the basement, garage or a workshop and can usually be built over a period of one weekend.
For most of us, the organization part can be tricky. Here are 7 tips that can help you build a great workbench:
1. Extension cords: These are probably one of the easiest things to get tangled up in. And they can be one of your biggest time wasters. To prevent any problems here, put a row of electrical outlets along the entire bench. If the bench is against the wall, but the extension cords along the back of the wall.
2. The bench surface: Birch wood is often the best material because of it's firm and it's light.
3. Light: Good light can help for protection. If you can see what you're doing, you will be less likely to injure yourself and more likely to produce quality products.
4. Comfort: Make sure that your bench is at a height that will help you avoid bending over and getting your shoulders, back, and arms to work too much. This could cause many problems over time. Your work surface should be the same height as your waist when you have shoes on.
5. Cost: You can avoid paying extra by using unfinished wood for the legs.
6. Adding a magnetic strip: A magnetic strip is a handy place to store your smaller tools for quick and convenient access.
7. Hardboards: These will give you a great place to store large tools if hung behind the work area and the shelves and hooks can be easily arranged to store exactly what you need.
Before beginning this DIY project, you want to decide what exactly you want your area to look like when you've finished. What features do you want added on to your bench and where do you want your bench to rest when it's all said and done? You want to make sure you have all the dimensions measured right and a picture of the final product in your head before you begin. If you are fortunate enough to picture your bench before you've finished, great.
