Tree Planting Tips:

Always dig a hole that is large enough to take the root ball of the tree or shrub and has room to spare all round. Break up the bottom of the hole with a garden fork and mix in some rotted organic material such as garden compost or spent mushroom compost. Carefully remove the container the tree or shrub is growing in, cutting it away if necessary so as not to damage the roots. Make sure that the plant will be growing at the same level as it was in the container - if it is too low add some more soil to the hole until it is at the right level. If desired, gently 'tease out' some of the stronger roots from the root ball so that they will grow quickly into the surrounding soil. Mix some of the rotted organic matter with the soil taken from the hole before back-filling the hole around the root ball and then firming gently with the foot. Loosen the soil surface after firming. Water well. Unstable trees or shrubs with large heads will require staking. Hammer a stake into the hole before putting the plant in the hole, or add a short diagonal stake after planting which does not pierce the root ball. Secure plant to stake with tree ties or ropes which are cushioned at the point where they make contact with the plant so that they will not chafe the bark. Smaller shrubs and trees usually establish more quickly than older specimens and will often overtake the older plants in subsequent years - therefore it is advisable to plant younger rather than older plants. They are cheaper too!
